What hertz means
A 50 Hz supply completes 50 cycles per second; a 60 Hz supply completes 60. Modern switched-mode power supplies often accept both, but electromechanical devices may behave differently.
Devices that may be sensitive
- ✓AC motors and pumps
- ✓Mains-synchronised clocks
- ✓Turntables and older audio equipment
- ✓Some medical or laboratory equipment
- ✓Appliances with transformers designed for one frequency
Use the label and manufacturer specification
If the device states 50/60 Hz, both common frequencies are covered within the stated voltage range. If it lists only one frequency, do not assume the other is acceptable.
