The essential difference
A travel adapter provides a physical connection between plug and socket systems, such as Type F to Type G. The mains voltage remains the voltage supplied in the destination country.
A voltage converter changes voltage. Most small travel converters do not also change frequency, and their continuous power rating may be much lower than the headline figure.

Read the INPUT rating
An input such as 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz normally covers both 120 V and 230 V countries. A label that only states 220–240 V, 50 Hz does not confirm operation on a 120 V, 60 Hz supply.
A three-step decision
Only recommend a product after all three checks. If the device data is unknown, the safe result is to inspect the label rather than guess.
- ✓Check whether the exact device plug fits the destination socket.
- ✓Check whether the destination voltage is inside the device INPUT range.
- ✓Check whether the destination frequency is supported.
High-power devices
Hair dryers, straighteners, kettles and irons often draw far more power than chargers. A compact converter or adapter can be unsuitable even if the plug fits. A dual-voltage appliance or a local appliance is often the simpler option.
